Adjusting Nutrition Values for Consistent Serving Size

Most Nutrition Facts Tables indicate the nutrition values of fiber, sugar, and protein per one single serving. But, you may see variations. Some might list the values for two servings. And some have an additional column for the values if you add something to the food, such as milk (typical of cereal products). The reality is that the relative values in relation to each other will remain the same whether the serving size is one, two, or ten. The values will simply be either lower or higher, but the shape of the graph, and, hence, the rating as smile, half-smile, flat face, or frown will remain the same. An example can illustrate.

But, one issue to keep in mind is with the flat face. Let us say the values are 2 grams across the graph, leading to a flat-face of 2 grams per fiber, sugar, and protein. This may seem benign. However, if this is listed for 1/10 serving, the reality is that you would need to multiply the values by 10 to understand the true amount of sugar consumed (and the main issue is consuming more or less of sugar). So, 2 times 10 is 20 grams. That might be much more sugar than you want to associate with one food item. That may exhaust your sugar “allowance” for the day. Therefore, you need to check if serving size is distorting your consumption levels. Most of the time, this will not be a problem, but a quick check of serving size in the table at the top (see image below) will suffice to inform you of the actual consumption levels for a particular food product.

Also, if you tend to eat either (1) half of a serving or (2) more than one whole serving, you should keep that in mind as your calculate your fiber-sugar-protein intake levels and sum your ongoing nutrition consumption each day.
