Everyone Loves to Smile!

About Us

SFINE’s founder and chief executive officer (CEO) is Jack Fishstrom, who has been concerned with healthy eating, nutrition, and personal well being since high school and realized that the student staples of soft drinks and potato chips were not good choices. He applied his Smile Food System to his personal food selection for many years before deciding to share it with everyone else in 2021. He has been studying and practicing healthy living, ecology, and mindfulness for decades. He shops for groceries carefully, cooks passionately, and keeps active daily. He has worked continually most of his life at a variety of different jobs, from mowing lawns and mixing paints, to washing dishes at a summer camp and scooping ice cream (5 cents a scoop) at Thrifty Drug Store. He has been a waiter, a furniture deliverer, and a candy-store clerk. His favorite job was separating pine needles from their branches, for later weighing, for 8 hours daily to support a silviculture research study. His longest-running job has been teaching at the University of Michigan since 1992.

In addition to being a health enthusiast, Jack is a filmmaker and an author. In 1998, he started production of an independent feature film, Voices, which he wrote and directed. The film premiered at the Michigan Theater in November 2000 and is available on YouTube. He is the author of a comprehensive writing textbook, Technical Communication for College and Career: How to Write in Academia, Business, Engineering, Research, Science, and Technology. Organized into five major parts, the book covers these essentials: delivering just the right document, writing elegant prose, fulfilling your communication purpose, persuading your reader, and mastering important genres. In addition, five appendices cover equally valuable topics: common composition mistakes; resumes, job cover letters, and thank-you notes; formatting essentials; conference posters; and oral presentations and projection slides. Using diverse examples of classic technical documents Jack explains—in a cheerful and sometimes cheeky style—how to write technical documents and design visual elements for scientific and technical explanation. The book, available in paperback and e-book, is ideal for college students and aspiring professionals honing their non-fiction writing skills for academia, business, engineering, research, science, and technology.

Jack’s writing portfolio includes hundreds of non-fiction items, such as proposals, environmental impact statements, public outreach materials, remedial designs, style guides, legal testimony, newsletters, magazines, software documentation, and published journal articles. In addition to his university teaching, he is a licensed attorney, small-business owner, and consultant to engineering, legal, and medical organizations. He earned a BA in Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley, magna cum laude, followed by an MA in Telecommunication Arts from the University of Michigan, and a JD from the University of Toledo, cum laude. He serves as an instructor or consultant to private companies; business, engineering, and medical schools; and several advanced national research centers. His communication objective is “making complex clear,” and the Smile Food System arises from that principle perfectly. His communication and consulting website is www.apexpersuasion.com. In his free time, he meditates, gardens, exercises, reads, cooks, travels, and does absolutely nothing, as often as possible.
